Enough is Enough: Six Wounded in North Memphis Shooting

In our society, funerals are an extremely emotional occasion where the gathered support of both friends and family can help ease the unfortunate passing of a loved one.  On Saturday afternoon, just such a group had assembled to celebrate the life of Will Johnson, Jr., an 80 year-old retiree from the Memphis Naval Air Station and a veteran of the US Army.  Sadly, the gathering was disrupted by random gunshots fired by a Memphis teenager.

Shortly before 6:00 pm, a green Toyota Tundra driven by 19 year-old Kwantavious Williams slowly approached the gathered friends and family of Johnson.  The group was assembled at 3052 Mt Olive, located in a quiet neighborhood just a few blocks from Douglas Park.  Leandrus Dennis, a 19 year-old passenger in the car, started randomly firing a weapon at the crowd, wounding six people in the process, including an off-duty MPD Officer.

The victims of the shooting were MPD Officer Elgin Lee, Christopher Lee, Julius Lee, Anthony Lee, Javarious Britton, Sr., and Javarious Britton, Jr.  A witness at the scene recognized Williams as being the driver of the vehicle and notified MPD detectives.  Both Williams and Dennis have been arrested and made statements of admission to the crime.  They are both charged with six counts of Class A Felony “First Degree Murder – Criminal Attempt.”

Both Elgin Lee and Christopher Lee where transported to the trauma unit of Regional One Health. Both men have been released.
